Cheap Propane Generator

Why own a Cheap propane Generator?
Obvious reasons of course include camping, RV's, construction sites and much more. However emergency power outages caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and snow storms, too many of which we have had in recent years, are good reason to have either a portable or a built in "standby" cheap propane generator.

Portable or built in Propane Generator?

A portable generator could of course go with the family camper and also be available for power outages at home. The main problem is the generator has to be run outdoors and then extension cords have to be run through the house to the desired accessories. A much better idea for the home is a built in standby propane generator of adequate size to run all of or at least the essential items in your home. How do you determine the size of the generator required? Click here for a "wattage" chart to help you determine your power needs. A generators power is rated at sea level and rated output wattage is reduced with altitude. At 10,000' a generator will lose up to 40% of it's rated output.

Home standby propane Generators come in most any size one might require. The better ones come with automatic switchover which will start your generator in case of power outage and supply power until your utility power returns and then disconnects and shuts down the generator. Select units will also have "load shed" ability allowing you to have essential circuits given priority while other lower priority circuits would be "load shed" in the event total power requirements exceeded the available output of your generator. This is a very nice optional feature.

Gas or Propane Generator? Gas generators are the most convenient for portable usage but for the home standby propane generators are definitely preferred. A gas generator would require a rather large gasoline storage tank and gasoline not used in several months becomes "stale" and has to be replaced if not used, obviously a major inconvenience. A cheap propane generator (natural gas can also be used but slightly lowers the available wattage output of the generator) will use the same propane already used by gas ranges, furnaces and hot water heaters and is already available in most homes. Cost per hour of a cheap propane generator can also be as much as 50% less per hour than a gasoline powered generator.
